1. Definition of Health and Disease
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease. A disease is any malfunction or disorder of the body or mind that disrupts normal functioning.
2. Categories of Diseases
Diseases are broadly classified into two main categories:
- Infectious (Communicable) Diseases: Transmitted from person to person via pathogens (e.g., Malaria, Cholera, Tuberculosis).
- Non-Infectious (Non-Communicable) Diseases: Cannot be transmitted. Caused by genetics, lifestyle, or nutrition (e.g., Diabetes, Cancer, Scurvy).
3. Common Pathogens and Vectors

4. Human Defense Mechanisms
The human body fights off pathogens using three lines of defense:
- First Line (Physical/Chemical): Skin, mucus membranes, and stomach acid.
- Second Line (Innate/Non-specific): Phagocytosis by white blood cells and inflammation.
- Third Line (Specific Immune Response): Production of antibodies by lymphocytes.
