Health is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

Types of Diseases

Communicable Diseases

Communicable diseases, also called infectious diseases, are caused by pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa. They can be transmitted directly or indirectly from an infected source to another susceptible person or host.

Non-Communicable Diseases

Waterborne Transmission

Waterborne diseases can spread when people consume water contaminated with disease-causing microorganisms. For example, Vibrio cholerae can cause cholera when contaminated food or water is consumed.

Vector-Borne Transmission

Vector-borne diseases are transmitted through organisms known as vectors. Female Anopheles mosquitoes can transmit the malaria parasite, Plasmodium, to humans.

Airborne and Droplet Transmission

Some infectious diseases can spread through respiratory droplets or particles released when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Tuberculosis is an important example of an infectious disease associated with airborne transmission.

Prevention and Control of Diseases
